Project Abstract

In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the effects of low and high resistance exercise applications for recreational purposes on muscle strength and muscle cross-sectional area.

22 male individuals participated in the study. Participants high resistance (HR) (n=11, age 20.55±1.97 years) and low resistance (LR) (n=11, age 21.55±3.05 years) were divided into two groups. Before and after the exercise protocol, 1 repetition maximum (1 RM), muscular endurance, quadriceps muscle cross-sectional area measurements were made. In the 8-week exercise protocol, the LR group performed the leg ekstansiyon exercise at an intensity of 30% of the 1 RM and 75% of the 1 RM of the HR group. SPSS16 analysis program was used to evaluate the data. Mixed design two-factor analysis of variance was used for repeated measurements in all variables of the groups. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.

A significant increase was observed in the 1 RM values of both groups after exercise (p<0.05). The diameter and muscle cross-sectional area values of the rectus femoris and vastus intermedius muscles of the participants increased in response to the exercises in both groups (p<0.05). These increases were similar in both groups.

Consequently, LR and HR groups showed similar muscle and strength increase despite different exercise intensities. For this reason, HR or LR may be preferred for muscle and strength development, taking into account participant qualifications, exercise experience, and resistance tolerances.
