Located in the northern Aegean Sea, the island of Thasos—known in antiquity by the same name—is a highly significant island both for its geopolitical position and its natural resources. Settled by Greek colonists during the Archaic Period, the city quickly came to dominate the surrounding waters and became an important player in regional trade. As a continuation of the city’s enclosing walls, the walls surrounding the enclosed harbor on the seashore also hold archaeological significance. These walls were studied and the harbor excavated between 1987-1993 by a team of French and Greek researchers as part of an underwater research project. The materials obtained during these excavations could not be thoroughly studied or published at the time due to the conditions of that period. Within the scope of the project titled “Thasos Harbor Studies,” it is planned that the artifacts from the harbor excavation, which had been placed in museum storage, will be examined by expert archaeologists, thereby producing a series of publications on the history of the harbor and the city.
