Prof. HASAN HÜSEYİN BAŞIBÜYÜK

Biography

He completed his elementary and high school education in Arapkir, Malatya and his bachelor degree at Hacettepe University in 1986. In the same year, he succeeded the entrance examination of Cumhuriyet University and was appointed as research assistant to the Department of Biology in 1987. He completed his MSc studies under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Turgut Tanyolaç in 1990. He merited the state scholarship to pursue his doctoral studies in abroad in 1992. After spending one academic year at Sheffield University (UK), he moved to London and completed his PhD at Imperial College (University of London) under supervision of Dr. Donald L.J. Quicke in 1996. Soon after, he started to work as a postdoctoral researcher for three years in a joint project between Imperial College and The Natural History Museum (London). In 1999, he was appointed as Assistant Professor at the Department of Biology, Cumhuriyet University. He became associate professor of biology  in 2000 and was appointed as a professor in 2006. He has been working for the Department of Gerontology, Faculty of Health Sciences, Akdeniz University since October 2017.

He attended many theoretical and practical studies on systematic biology in UK where he travelled many times between 1998 and 2001 with the scholarship of British Council. He received a scholarship from the European Science Foundation (EFS) to study the fossils housed at the Paleontology Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1999. He was a member of EFS Conservation Genetics program from Turkey and he presented a talk in the group meeting in Hungary in 2009. In 2011, he visited Southampton University to exchange ideas on ecology and environment with a short-term scholarship provided by the Higher Education Council. He supervised many research projects and many graduate theses. He has published more than 40 papers in national and international journals and presented more than 50 talks at numerous meetings. He continues to work on the education, training and dissemination of systematic biology, phylogenetic, evolutionary biology and biological aging.
